You could use a laserpointer instead of the led and get much more distance. And that would potentially be less annoying for the user than a really bright led shining everywhere. 

For long distances that would be a good idea, but for shorter distances Leds are better as they have faster switching time, are less harmful when compared to lasers and provides illumination as well as data transfer at the same time.
