Description

I go to Illinois Tech and no one (to the best of my knowledge) has done any sort of room automation yet. The goal is to have all of my appliances and everything on my network (ie. lights, fans, shades, music, etc.) controlled by this system. I'll be able to set different modes (alarm, sleep, movie, etc.) and basically build on it as I go.

So after some research into home automation kits that are already out there, I'm setting a new goal of keeping the entire project well below $500, seeing as the preexisting kits that could even come close to this start at $700.

So after some research, I've decided to use BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to connect all the devices in the room to the control center, which will then be connected to wifi. That being said, my next step will be to design an efficient, low cost device that will allow me to send commands to the control center via wifi, which will then delegate that command to the BLE-enabled devices. If anyone has experience working with BLE, any advice would be much appreciated.

Right now I'm in the planning stage, trying to figure out what I need to get, how much I have to spend, and how exactly I want to implement everything. Right now, I'm looking at omnidirectional mikes for voice control and an old HTC incredible to use as a remote. I also have the RasPi and 7" touchscreen that I want to use for the main control interface at the front of the room.

When I went to Cal in '11, me and a guy were working on the same idea living a block away from each other. I used the x10 power line control system and I think he did to. The biggest expense in the CM11a USB module which costs around 100$ but easy to build under 300$ total if you are good with php commands. I never got around to take a video coz i got carried away with the voice-based AI system using machine learning and such, but this guy ended his project there and made it to CNN! :) BTW, these are all PNP modules, so you don't have to redo the wiring in your dorm room and get in trouble with the housing folks. Hey Jasmine: Nope, I just got back from being out of the country, and work has been taking up a lot of time. Not sure if I am going to be able to get the project done in time for thehackadayprize, and I'd rather complete the project to a higher standard than rush to finish it for the contest. Thanks!

Hey Gryph17, have you got past the planning stage? If so, it would be great to have an update.

Also, I noticed you tagged this project with 'thehackadayprize', but have not officially submitted it. We updated the submission process a little while ago, so you need to login and use the 'submit to' under your project images on the left hand side.

You might want to check out the nrf24l01 modules there cheap and there a bunch of libs to use em. IF you want an easy and cheap way to connect everything.

There is also these serial modules from elecrow that are even easier to work with but a bit more p[ricey. http://www.elecrow.com/serial-wifi-module-usr232-p-875.html
