I use a Philips trimmer for grooming which has a Ni-Cd cell. Almost every time I decide to use the trimmer the battery is dead or is low on charge. I then have to charge it and use it the next day. The charger that came with the trimmer is a puny 4.5V @70mA. Inside the trimmer is a DC motor and a SPDT switch which disconnects the charger if turned on so that its charging only when the trimmer is off. I removed the battery, cut off the wire from the charger with the pin and connect the wire to 5V 2A SMPS adapter. I used 4 diodes to drop the voltage as it was too violent at 5V. The plastic tabs that keep the two halves together got weak and were not able to keep trimmer in one piece so had to use CA glue, hoping to never open it again. Now it works really well.
I used its with four diodes and after 2-3 min of use the case became very hot. And the speed of the motor also increased. So removed the diodes and added a LM2596 DC-DC step down module. Unfortunately the module was too big to fit in the case. so I added the module in line with the wires and covered it with 25mm shrink tube covered the ends with hot glue. I made a small cut for the small screw on the pot in the module. Now its perfect. I can adjust the speed very easily and not parts are getting heated.
There's enough space to insert a small TP4056 based Li-Ion charger and 18650 battery. I've been planning to do that with my trimmer when the battery goes dead :-)
Sure :) , I removed the wires of the battery and the battery itself. So now there are only two wires coming from the charge pin to the small circuit board. Move the black wire coming from charge pin to where the black wire was of the battery. I used a 5V @ 2A smps adapter. I used 4 diodes in series on white wire inside the trimmer so its at 2.2V. Then I cut off the charge pin wire from the charger and connected to the smps wires, so it can be easily be connected and disconnected.
i have the same model :D would you please elaborate the configuration you did to turn the trimmer to using the adapters supply ? and what voltage/current you found to run the trimmer smoothly ? Ty in advance.
