FYI, BG96 is more suitable for this application as it got embedded GPS as well, you are allowed to have overhanging components (BG96 is 22.5mm × 26.5mm × 2.3mm, making it 1.5mm too long), better ask judges before.
Hi, Im currently work in others projects with UG96 and L86 Modules from QUECTEL and my BG96 kit are not arriving yet but I thought a lot on use BG96 for this project.
my first problem was the size of the module, the second was the waste of periferics like audio (PCM Interface) and then in the same page I see this tiny module and I could see the light at the end of this long 3 years tunnel.
I really appreciate your suggestion coz I dont knew about the code running on the module.

Also, if you look carefully on the internet you will find out that BG96 also have support for running your application code directly. No MCU needed.
