Standing Rolling Server Desk

A custom built hideaway desk suitable for use at standing height. Supporting multiple monitors and a 21u server rack underneath.

I discovered a 42u server cabinet for only £5

After managing to get it to fit into my Berlingo i took it home.

Removing the rear rails and cutting them in half gives me Qty 4 x 21u rails.

The rest of the cabinet can be used as a workshop cupboard until I have a use for it.

I've been inspired by DIY Server Rack so the main structure will be 2x4's though I will probably use mortise and tenon rather than pocket holes.

Then plywood to sheet the structure and 4 heavy duty castoring wheels underneath all of which will have brakes.

I will need to plan the desk section on top and the hideaway/fold out worksurface elements.

The height of 21u is 935mm and the recommended standing desk height for me is 1200mm

That gives 265mm for structure below the rack and structure above the rack to deliver a working surface at this height. That should be enough to accommodate the wheels and desk surface.

The rack will probably take an area similar to the original server cabinet so a minimum of 960mm wide by 600mm deep.

  • 4 × 21u double angle rack rail harvested from 2 x 42u double angle rack rails

  • Lumber Choice

    Joni07/18/2017 at 12:08 0 comments

After despairing of finding a straight 2x4 I bought some better quality construction lumber

C18 they are 45x70x3000mm reasonably straight and with a smooth surface

  • Main dimensions

Separation between the inside of the wooden structure needs to be 450+(56*2)

That's 450mm separation between the inside of each rail plus 56mm for each rail.

    19-inch rack details

    That's 564mm in total.

Height of the total rolling desk/cabinet is determined by what can roll through a standard door.

  • Hideaway details

A little massaging in OpenSCAD and the desk takes shape.

Working out how the hideaway mechanism will work and whether it will fold out to create additional desk space will be key to this projects success and how easy it will be to create.

  • Modelling additional detail

    Joni10/28/2016 at 13:20 0 comments

I've added the monitor support to the model v3 and you can see that there will be a need for external structure to support the sheeting around and also some serious thought needed if this is going to be a hideaway desk.

Also some careful measurements to see what amount of protrusion is needed in front and behind the servers to manage the cables etc and cover them nicely with a door.

I'm also concerned regarding overall stability.

  • Dimensioned Model

    Joni10/28/2016 at 12:30 0 comments

Right so i've now created an OpenSCAD model of the structure to hold the rails and the rails with the correct size holes and hole spacing.

It's an interesting exercise and it shows the full size of the desk frame.

Hopefully I can create the bridle joints in the model as well at a later date and perhaps work out how I want the remainder of the desk to look.

  • Rails

    Joni10/27/2016 at 18:13 0 comments

The rails in the rack I bought seem to have an unusual profile. Not right angle and not quite the same as double angle rail either. Total width is 56mm by 120mm deep.

I've made a rough OpenScad module for the rails to ensure I allocate enough space for them. Measurments wern't really used. It's just a rough guess.

  • Modelling the Desk DraftSight vs OpenSCAD

    Joni10/27/2016 at 13:52 0 comments

Did a little bit of modelling using Draftsight to rough things out and also had a little bit of a play in OpenSCAD.

If I can make OpenSCAD do bridle joints it could be a nice way of modelling the desk.

    All elements are 2x4's (35x89mm)

Internal space is 935x450x600mm which is sufficient for a 21u 4-post 19" rackmount setup.

If I get a chance I will include the double angle rack rails in the model.
