ThomasSTM8S001J3M3 chips are easy to solder and they're powerful enough for small MODBUS nodes, and for interactive STM8 eForth nodes, too.
Since free shipping from China has almost tried up, these chips have become more expensive. A good price with free shipping is an opportunity for stocking up worth sharing.
This chip can be used with the very small MODBUS board available from @oshpark, three of which cost just $1.65 (but at that price please order some more OSH boards or else the PCBs will feel really lonely in the large bag).

Hi Thomas, unfortunately that free shipping seems to depend on where in the world it's shipped to. ☹️ I've decided that to reduce shipping overhead a way is put in a large order of many items and as a bonus they may use a faster channel. Of course this is only possible if the shop has a variety of items.

I guess that one has to identify a seller that actually has their own stocks (i.e. not a "dropshipper"). You do you do that?

If the items are all within a small range of categories, say soldering equipment and supplies, or LEDs and displays, and there is a large range, then it's quite likely they are a stockist.
Even so, delays are inevitable in this C-19 era. It seems the inland PCB fabs are suffering longer delays than the ones near major cities. I see from tracking that one of my finished orders had to be diverted from Guangdong to Shanghai. It's also partly due to the air traffic constrictions here.
