My sister nearly killed herself by inhaling epoxy fumes from a craft project she was working on. She was going to put something together herself and asked me to look at her design. It was inadequate, so I took over and built this. Nothing fancy here, but it just sucks wind. It's a plastic tote with an 8" hole in the top and a rectangle cut in the front. I used butyl tape to attach a piece of clear lexan to allow good visibility to the interior of the tote. An 8" flexible duct is attached to the top with a flange and a stainless hose clamp. There is an inline vent fan between the hood and the duct that attaches to an exterior flange. My advice: Make sure you get a fan that will move an adequate volume of air. You will notice here that there is no way to work with items within the hood. In my specific use-case, the user will place their arms under the front of the tote for access. It could be adapted to use gloves. Good luck! Stay healthy.
Great project! What blower are you using? I've in the past used bilge blowers since they have easy mounting tabs molded in and have worked well when I hook them up with a PWM controller. Bonus they are marine use so tolerant of some moisture. Can find them in 3 and 4in sizes. In my previous uses their CFM have been enough (specs list roughly 200CFM at full tilt), but if you've found something that has better specs I'd be interested to learn what you've found for future projects.
VOCs are no joke, especially for young women. It always drives me nuts when my daughter uses acetone to strip paint off the dolls she loves to modify. This is a great idea, and I'll have to see about making one for her.
