The goal of the project is to create a simple 3D Volumetric Display / "hologram" by vibrating a led array at high speed to visualize 3d models. I have been working on true volumetric display sysstem for quite a while. A couple years ago I developed by myself the VVD (http://madaeon.design/portfolio/vvd/), a volumetric display based on a high speed monocromatic DLP projector, connected to a PC. This time, I am investigating the development of a low cost, color, led based volumetric display. The first prototype is Teensy 3.6 - based.
I am designing a new version, with PCB coils, inspired by the flexible coils acutators designs by Carl Bugeja. This version should be much more silent. I still have no idea about the max Z travel. Led array should be much more dense too.
This video shows the feasibility of the project. Resolution, noise, speed, can be improved, but the point here was more a proof of concept. A piece of paper sheet is used as a diffuser to get a better effect.
great work. what is the approximate frequency at which you are oscillating? I am trying my hands at a rotating 3d pov but just cant seem to get the refresh rate right. thanks
