This project has been shelved because the Pi400 load switch on the 5V GPIO makes it pretty much impossible to reliably power the thing through the GPIO. Too bad, but not much can be done about it.

That is a proper shame. I'm using my Pi 400 as a daily driver and was quite interested in powering it through GPIO for another project. Is it possible to upgrade the fuse?

I'm sure it's possible to remove the chip and bridge it. Doesn't help me since I want to make a peripheral that works with unmodified devices, but it may help you for that project. :)

Good to know. My project, PiCarts, is meant for stock devices as well, and a battery back on the GPIO was an idea I put on the back burner. Shelved it after reading your findings here. I may still make one that connects to GPIO for physical mounting, but supplies power over USB. Would work, but not nearly as elegant or proper.
