This project adds a hardware microphone mute feature to the Amazon Echo Dot. This adds an extra layer of security against microphone attacks (i.e. DolphinAttack and sound-mod lasers). It uses a Seeeduino Xiao microcontroller that is is contained inside the Echo Dot 2nd gen smart speaker, which it also uses for power, triggering, and indications. I hope this will inspire other types of modifications for the DIY security community, and is especially valuable to those who distrust companies like Amazon or Google with the surveilling or handling of their personal information.
