Turns out there is. After some tinkering, the box works pretty well. Two strong neodymium magnets are driven by a reused HDD spindle motor, an RC 3-phase driver runs the spindle. The Arduino only generates the servo signal for the motor driver.

A small, nearly invisible dent/hollow on the box lid holds the spinning ring centered.

That really was a rewarding project.
