The Soda stream bottle are always difficult to clean because of their form (narrow opening with large base). Also, they have bottom plastic part that is glue to the main bottle that get dirty after a few months of usage that can't be cleaned. This bottom part is not in contact with the water, but this is not so nice to drink from a bottle that look dirty. Since I often empty my soda stream content into my hydro flask, I decided to design an adapter to use directly the hydro flask instead of the soda steam bottle.
I purchase my first 3D printer in January 2022 and this is my first 3D printing project. Turn out it wasn't the easiest project to start with, and the project has been on and off since then. In the end, I decided to separate the project in two parts:
To overcome the leak issue, I decided to use a replacement rubber gasket of hydro flask in my design. To test how much water tight my design was, I decided to start my designing a cover instead of going directly for the adapter.
hydro flask cover
Improve thread
I received a caliper as a gift that help me take more precise measurement of the hydro flask thread. This created a much more water tight interface.
Leak through the plastic
The first iteration I did had leak through the plastic itself. Here are some modification I brought to my design and printing process to get a water tight print
Rounded edge inside the cover
3D print at higher temperature (210 C)
Increase the number of layer on top, bottom and the wall.
Result
In the end, the final cover was tested with for 1h with the bottle tilted and couldn't find any leak of water.
I provided in the files section, the stl file of the hydro flask cover.
I worked on my first design from January 2022 to March 2022, learning FreeCad from this amazing channel and applying what I learned to my first design.
I did a few iterations that are shown in the picture below to find:
Thread compatible with the hydro-flask (I did a few iterations to get a working thread)
Design that fits inside the soda stream
The first iteration couldn't fit because the top part wasn't long enough
Thread compatible with the soda stream
The soda stream I have doesn't use the thread. It uses the larger base layer (yellow arrow) to attach to the soda stream bottle and form a
sealed link. In the mean time, I improved the visual look of the
design.
In the end, I was able to design a working adapter. However, I realized quickly that the interface between the adapter and the hydro-flask needed to be fully sealed to avoid any spill.
From this point, the project was toss away until December 2022 to focus on other projects.
