Those are steel washers, you can turn a steel spacer instead but I didn't have a lathe and didn't have time to order them.
The inner plates are squeezed' between the outside plates. You can use it like that, but there are limited abilities to attach anything to it.
That's why I have those two extra plates that need to be welded.
I weld everything because in my case I have relatively large console load, that generate significant torque along X and Y axes.
Keep in mind since the square tubes come with significant tolerances this is not very precision solution. It's good for such an applications where you want to guide, but you no need accuracy. This design will not be good for CNC for example.

Are those washers or rubber grommets or ? Are the bearings just kind of 'squeezed in there', or what are they actually 'sitting on' ?
