Fungi sound

Reinterpreting headphone design from a sustainable approach, uniting nature and technology using fungi and biomaterials

Similar projects worth following
Fungi Sound seeks to be a new listening experience, creating headphones with mycelium, a biomaterial obtained from the Pleurotus ostreatus, commonly known as Oyster mushroom. This material has high acoustic absorption, a property that optimizes audio quality.

This is how unique hearing aids of their kind are created, with biodegradable materials that guarantee an optimal experience for the user without sacrificing the environment.

The headphone industry is dominated by plastic headphones, and environmentally friendly headphones are rare to find.

Fungi Sound wants to incorporate biomaterials to minimize the environmental impact plastic headphones could generate. Using mycelium we are not only exploring a new material that could have many uses in the future of design and technology, but also we are exploring a material that has many great qualities, and integrating nature into an everyday product.

When we first started working we wanted to experiment with biomaterials, and we found out about the mycelium, a biomaterial that is generated as a network of fungal threads or hyphae.

After some research, we found out that experiments and work with mycelium are rare in Mexico, so we partnered with a biologist so she could advise us through the process.

After more research about mycelium, we wanted to incorporate technology into our final product, and we wanted to bring this product into everyday life.

Our team loves listening to music, and we each have headphones, so we started working to ideate a new concept of headphones that incorporated mycelium.

In design, we consider biomaterials as smart materials, and we work with them as technologies.

For the headphone functions, we generated an internal circuit, and we added Bluetooth with features to turn the sound up and down, take calls, and pause the music.

We want to develop and research a little further some new components and technologies for the internal circuit, so these components could be reused, recycled or even biodegrade and have an even more friendly to the environment product.

We also want to find new ways to grow the mycelium, to keep experimenting with new shapes and ways to incorporate it in the headphones, or even in other future projects.

We want to make Fungi Sound a project that can evolve easily, implementing new technologies and materials, so this can be a project that moves with tendencies and new technological developments.

This is an incredible idea. Just about the wonkiest approach I can imagine. I love it! It doesn't even matter if it's practical or not.
