Why the Diavox?

A project log for DIAVOX Cellphone

Turning an old diavox phone into a cellphone. No smart stuff, just a telephone. Pick up the handset and dial just like the old days.

Originally I though about using one of the old ericsson dialog rotary dial telephones for this project. However they are built to last and are heavy. I want to be able to carry it around.

The more modern diavox is a lot lighter in weight and when putting all the stuff including battery in it, would still be way way lighter than the old dialog telephone. It also features real bells which is a requirement of course. However no rotary dial but I can live with that.

The 4x3 keypad also gives me a '*' and '#' button which might be required to be used during some phonecalls. The R button which can be used for various things. The diavox also comes with free space inside the body, a circuit board to mount things on so on.

Now the diavox phone I have doesn't have a volume knob, I guess that feature could be done using the R key somehow.
