All components received
03/10/2017 at 19:01 • 0 commentsToday, I received the last shipment of components. Naturally, I am quite excited to play with the MCU and the radio chip. The fun starts already with the assembly: although I have soldered an MSOP10 package (like the Si4012) before, it will be my first time soldering a TQFP48 package (the size the EFM32ZG222 came in). I ordered most of the passives in 0805 packages, which I have dealt with successfully before. However, the space restrictions on the PCB might require some planning on my part to make sure the components I want to solder are somewhat accessible.

Programming tool assembly
03/05/2017 at 08:38 • 0 commentsToday, I assembled the SWD connector and the FTDI breakout board from Ada Fruit. I am planning on using them in combination with OpenOCD for programming the chips. While I was at it, I also soldered one of the Si7021 breakout boards. Since I am still waiting for the last component shipment, I might play around with the sensor on the breadboard.

Fit test
03/02/2017 at 19:58 • 0 commentsAlthough I don't have all the components yet, I was curious to test the fit of the ones that have already arrived. I was especially interested in the fit of the debug connector, as it is the first time I am using a connector in this configuration (i.e. in plane with the board and with contacts on both sides of the board). Turns out the connector fits perfectly. If anything the fit is a bit tighter then I thought it would be.
While I was at it, I also dropped on the battery holder. As of now, I did not solder anything. I want to start populating the board with the ICs, as I would think that they are the trickiest parts.

PCBs arrived from OSH Park
03/01/2017 at 20:07 • 0 commentsToday, the PCBs from OSH Park arrived. I really like how they turned out. Now I am just waiting for the last few components before I can start assembling the sensors.

First components arrived
02/25/2017 at 13:37 • 0 commentsToday, the first components arrived. Some assembly will be required, but afterwards I should be able to try the sensor breakout on the breadboard. I am expecting the boards from OSH Park next week and I still have to order the main bunch of the ICs and passives. However, they should only take a few days to arrive.
