Plant133

A simple indoor plant watering device, which waters up to 4 plants.

Plant133 is yet another plant-watering system. It supports up to 4 plants. It uses a custom PCBA with an ESP32, a capacitive soil moisture sensor, and an aquarium pump. It integrates with Home Assistant. The GitHub repository includes C++ software, KiCAD designs, and OpenSCAD files for all 3D-printed parts. Everything is MIT-licensed. See https://selectiveappeal.org/posts/plant1337/.

Plant133 is a simple indoor plant-watering device. Its job is to keep a houseplant happy by watering it: keeping the soil moisture level between some minimum and maximum amount. I first posted about the project in 2023, after a long series of prototypes, as I taught myself about how to build a project like this. This first post describes the basic design of the hardware and software, and how it integrates with Home Assistant.

Here is a simple system diagram.

The watering state machine looks like this;

A year later, I published an update about the improved 4-plant version of the devce, with updated hardware and software.

  • Adding a Svelte web interface

    The original, simple web interface used to configure and control the Plant133 device has been replaced by a new interface based on the Svelte framework.

    I wrote a  blog post on how to build a self-hosted Svelte interface for ESP32-based devices.  The interfaces can be very compact and work nicely.

  • Making Plant133 more reliable

    I wrote a new blog post on Making Plant133 More Reliable.  It covers the fix of a bug in the PCB, and the most common part failures: pumps and moisture sensors.

    Here is a recent example of a moisture sensor that failed due to corrosion.

    I'm trying out a fix of sealing the edges of the sensor PCB with epoxy to see if that will alloiw it tor survive longer.

    I also posted a brief note about 3D-printing fixtures for aligning stencils with PCBs when applying solder paste. This made board assembly much easier!
