Why Injection Molding?
The labs strategy with our injection molding machine is two fold...
First, we want to deliver to the teams invited to work at the lab the ability to do low volume production runs of parts cast in thermoplastic, and ensure that the parts they get are of high quality at low cost. The goal is to allow a resident to get a run of 200 parts of a 4oz shot size or less, for less than $1 a part.
Second, we feel it is crucially important to be able to provide for the community the same amount and quality of content that is currently available for CNC fabrication techniques. The vast majority of all the products the world interacts with on a daily basis contain injection molded parts, but the amount of publicly available material on that process is minuscule compared to the amount of information available for milling. We want to make sure that there is a solid resource available for engineers, hackers, makers and designers to help them come to grips with the concepts associated with injection molding, and how they could approach it themselves if they wanted to.
