Truck Bedcover

My project will reduce the drag on the bed of a truck by preventing the de-lamination of airflow as it leaves the test vehicles.

A truck has a very large area of drag with the bed. My project covers the bed to reduce the drag on the truck and improve economy.
I have a 2000 GMC Sierra extended cab 4x4 with a 5.3L V8 with 180k miles for one vehicle
and I have a 2003 Chevy silverado extended cab 4x4 with a 4.8L V8 with 106K miles for my other vehicle
Both have been recently serviced and are currently getting approximately 15 MPG. I plan on getting a monitoring device to monitor the economy via the OBD2 port so I can more accurately plot the economy and any changes as they happen.

I plan on using a technique referred to as poor mans fiberglass to create the shell over shaped and bonded foam shell to create a bonded weather tight shell to direct the flow of air over the bed of my truck. doing this should prevent de-lamination (cavitation) of the air flow which will reduce the drag force on the back of my truck.

Poor mans fiberglassing is essentially impregnating cloth with paint to make it rigid and capable of withstanding the elements. when used with a foam shell it is recommended you use an adhesive to bond the canvas too the foam on the first layer and apply paint to subsequent layers to ensure the cloth adheres. I plan on using the roll on bedliner because it has proven to be Durable in the past.

  • 3 × Foamular insulation board 48x96x1 inch rigid foam board
  • 2 × canvas sheet 9'x14'
  • 2 × ratchet straps
  • 1 × Tite bond 2 adhesive 1 gallon
  • 1 × Roll on bed liner 1 gallon

  • Still In planning phase

Hi everyone sorry for the lack of updates Ive been inundated by daily life. I have drawn up plans based on measurements of the truck. I have also conducted a test of poor mans fiberglassing in order to ensure I understand what Im doing and hopefully prevent any unwanted hiccups while laying fabric down. I'll get my plans uploaded soon so you can see what Im working with. and Ill take a picture of my test of the gluing technique and explain how I went about it to get the best results.
