My first step was to prototype the mechanism, which is where this rough wooden version came from. 

Although it looked good, I needed something much more refined as the wooden version just proved the concept.

After many hours of CAD and simulation, my next iteration looked like this:

This really brought the project to life but I realised I had made a crucial mistake by trying to design both the casing, and the mechanism at the same time. At that point, I designed a standalone mechanism that could be assembled completely separately from the base. 

With that successfully designed and 3D printed, I went on to CNC machine a base and cap. It turned out rather nicely! 

Now we have a working single mechanism, in my next video, I will scale this up to a full piano octave!
