1Prepare the host and start VICE runtime
Install Node.js 24+, VICE 3.9+ with x64sc, c1541, petcat and ROM files, and Docker or Podman.
On the host, start this command and keep it running:
npx -y --package=@henols/c64-re-tools@latest c64-re-tools-host
Current setup documentation: https://github.com/henols/c64-re-tools/blob/main/README.md

2Open the development container and check the connection
Add the repository’s example .devcontainer/devcontainer.json to your project. Adapt its image, agent settings and host runtime address. Merge the feature and runArgs into an existing configuration rather than replacing it.
Open the project in your editor’s development container, or run: npx -y @devcontainers/cli up --workspace-folder .
Inside the container, check: npx -y @henols/c64-re-tools@latest status
Try asking your agent: Write a small ACME 6510 program, run it in VICE, capture the screen and verify the expected state.
Example configuration: https://github.com/henols/c64-re-tools/blob/main/devcontainer/example/devcontainer.json
