- get cheap "CP2102 breakout board" for sub-2eur
- cut the 5V power trace on the bottom and solder the 3V3 jumper link
- crack open the enclosure of OBD2 Wifi toy
- remove wifi module from main pcb
- solder 2.5mm to 2mm adapter header from junk bin parts (or just use some wires)
- connect the two: GND to GND, POWER to POWER(3V3!!!) TX to TX and RX to RX (yes, they swapped the signal names on CP2102 breakout board silk screen)
- connect CP2102 breakout board to usb port and fire up putty
- connect with 38400 baud
- send the following ...
+++ cmd> setet 4 Ok cmd> setwp ***************** Ok cmd> setssid Bordnetz Ok cmd> wificonfig SSID : Bordnetz Network Type: AP(2) Encrypt Type: WPA2-AES(4) PassPhrase : ***************** Ap's channel: 1 Dhcp Client : enable Ok cmd> saveconfig Saving Configuration to FLASH Ok cmd> reboot device will reboot... Ok cmd>
- UNPLUG and REPLUG the usb dongle so wifi module does HARD RESET
- restart your laptop or at least the wireless drivers/interface to forget "known ssid" list (else it tries to connect WITHOUT encryption, which will fail
- connect to wireless network, input passphrase, done
and *tadaa*

Thanks for all the discovery and hacking. I am reading the instructions on how to secure the wifi and for the life of me I can't figure out what you mean by cutting the 5v trace. It looks like the CP2012 already has a 3.3V power out? Do I have to use a jumper and sever a trace to get 3.3 out of this board?
Also, my wifi module says Nufront on it but looks almost identical. Is it based on the same AXIX chipset?

is it possible to make the elm scan for an wifi network, if found connect (credentials saved in code), if not switch to ap mode

For this, you may want to replace the integrated wifi module with an ESP8266 and script this via LUA.

Hey. Can you please provide an exact pin connection for accessing the wifi module with an Uart converter?
Given this one:

is it in order 2,3,4,5 for GND,TX,RX,POWER?

You are right. See https://hackaday.io/project/2523/log/7428 for a pinout.
2 GND. 3 TX. 4 RX. 5 3.3V (not 5!). 38400 baud.

ok, I got this one

but I can't see how to get 3.3V out of it...

this board provides 3.3V singal levels but no 3.3V supply voltage. you could use something like LD1117V33 (from Conrad) plus two decoupling caps (100nF / 1uF), or a cp2012 based adapter (cp2012 contains 5V to 3.3V regulator, adapter boards are 1-3 eur at ebay, incl. shipping).
