At first I took the rim home and spray panted it to make it look a little bit better.
There I also made the "shank" (the axle).
Because it was too long, I cut it shorter and welded a screw to it,... to fasten it to the wall (with a dry wall plug).
The next day my colleague Willi did the assembly with the leds and the main part,... the soldering, while I copied some Ardoino libraries together to get the clock running wiht a NTPClient.
The last part was simply to put the tire on and find a good spot to mount it.

Nice idea I am also working on a same type of projects you can see here on rochdale removals andf give me a feedback about it.
As I wrote,... the main work was done by Willi my colleague.
Since the stirp was not curved we needed to "compensate" it somehow ;)
At first I was like "what a good idea for a strip", but then I saw you've hand-wired each LED o.O awesome project!
That was the idea at first, to wrap the LED strip around the wheel. But as it turned out, we only had a 26" wheel available (which makes for an awkward number of LEDs with the usual 30LEDs/m strips) and you almost could not see the LEDs (we tried with plastic tubing, and experimented with a few other ideas).
That meant we had to mount the LEDs on the rim, facing towards the wall. Unfortunately there's no way you can do that without splitting the strip.
In the end I soldered about 300 spots, 239 being the minimum (I had to use leftovers because I ran out of the silvered copper wire, which then meant that I had to solder two times the spots compared to the one-continuous-wire approach). Once I got the hang of it it wasn't that bad.

I have tried the same program for my home decor products which I shop online. Its really a great experience for me.
