Hackaday Munich: Hot Irons and Crunching Compilers

Hackaday will host an event in Munich Germany on November 13th. Help decide what we do at the event.

UPDATE: The Hackaday Munich page is live. Go get your tickets now! http://hackadaymunich.com/

The Hackaday Prize, our 6-month initiative to promote Open Design, ends in November. The Hackaday crew will be at Electronica in Munich, Germany to announce the winner. In conjunction with this we rented a huge venue to host a hacking event and party.

Please join the discussion. Tell us what you'd like to do that day!

Mark your calendar, take the day off of work (tell your boss it's "professional development") and come test your hacking skills with the Hackaday crew in Munich Germany on Thursday, November 13th.

We've rented Technikum at TonHalle, a huge venue that is perfect for the celebration we're going to throw that night. It marks the end of the 2014 Hackaday Prize where the ranking of the final five projects (currently there are 50 competing to make the finals) will be announced.

What kind of hands-on hacking do you want to do?

Here's the deal: we have the venue for the entire day. So why stop at just a party?

This is our first official event in Europe, we want to build something great! There's plenty of space, and with a little bit of help from the Hackaday community members who live in the area we think we can do just about anything! What would you like to see us do in Munich?

Leave a comment below, but here's a stream of consciousness to get you started: classic alarm-clock retrofits (inspired by Sprite_TM) which makes us think of doing scratch-built DCF77 receiver modules. It would be fun to do some type of huge art build to be displayed at the party... many hands make for easy soldering? Robot maze solver build (we'd also need to build a maze ;-). What if we developed a mesh-network text messaging protocol ahead of time and challenged everyone to build the coolest front-end hardware for it?

As you can see, we need a lot of help focusing our ideas and can't wait to hear what you think we should do!

  • Contest for the Daytime

    Mike Szczys09/23/2014 at 22:17 1 comment

We're frantically working on the most awesome of plans for the daytime hacking event on Thursday, November 13th.

Because we are limited on time and tools it will be pretty hard to have some from-scratch hardware builds (we're afraid theyd get started but never be finished). But what we are excited about is bringing some interesting hardware to use for a few sets of contests. For instance, a reverse engineering contest, a firmware development contest, a machine learning contest, and an efficiency contest.

What do you think about these themes? What would you add to make the day really spectacular? Do you have any suggestions on the type of hardware to use for each theme?

Thanks for your help brain-storming this!

Thanks for the help, we had a blast in Munich!

Thanks, I had a wonderful time visiting Germany and it was amazing to see a room full of people happily hacking away on all kinds of things.

(The International Shipping Fee is not nothing ;))

Best regards,

Nope, sorry we're not bringing store stuff to Munich, but if you get one of the event Swag Envelopes (limited qty - first come, first served), you will get a discount code. Also, shipping in now free on orders over $50.

Damn, I booked an all-day tickets on Friday, but I just saw you have to book workshops individually. I got the very last Robotics ticket, but my friend has missed out on everything :(

Mike Szczys wrote 10/20/2014 at 18:38 point
David, there are some more tickets available now. You should have your friend take a look.

Also, keep checking back as they do come available as people's plans change and they cancel their tickets.

Also having an issue with no workshop ticket yet. Maybe you could add an extra workshop.
This guy (http://acko.net/about/) is doing nice stuff with math and visualisations.

If there is anyone from Berlin who wants to share his gasoline expenses (not trusting the GDL right now) or anyone from Munich who knows a place to sleep - please give me a sign :)

As far as a HaD projects goes, I have a few ESP8266's, and I'd like to build
the most useless IoT device ever.

- Internet Connected Manual Toothbrush (using an accelerometer) ?
- Internet Connected Toilet (toilet seat monitor) ?

Any more suggestions?

Kojote wrote 10/06/2014 at 10:07 point
Bwahahaha

- IoT Headphones - random Music that can be controlled by a webpage without Login (i call it the CrowdChan Radio of Madness)
- IoT Shaver (Website with an on/off Button ?)

davedarko wrote 10/20/2014 at 00:12 point
what about a "router internet light is on" thing, that tells you you are connected, when you are connected. That sounds pretty useless to me. Anyway, I have three lying around here and also want to make something with those. I hope I can get there.

David wrote 10/20/2014 at 12:14 point
Hey, I just found out you can use the ESP8266 as an Access Point!

That means you could have a super low-bandwidth device that reports data via the SSID... ie, monitor which houseplants need water by checking your Wifi AP list...

Or, you could spam messages all over a city with SSID's on the cheap

davedarko wrote 11/09/2014 at 08:49 point
I'm totally out of my experience range here, but I thought about using the ESP8266 for a game boy printer to cloud bridge - fetching data from a server with it and then send it to the gameboy printer. Best would be without an arduino/attiny communicating over GPIO0 and GPIO2. No idea if it actually works though.

Is it your PCR machine? If so, absolutely, and I am reserving 1on1 session with you, Sir. PCR machine is on my backburner todo list for a long time now. We built our own laboratory and can work with DNA aptamers / we made some aptamer sensors in the past. It would be nice to discuss our and your experiences with DNA. How do we meet?

Are you sure? yes | no

David wrote 10/06/2014 at 07:45 point
Yeah, its the PCR machine. I could bring it as it's pretty sturdy. I was thinking about setting up a table at Munich Make, but I'm not 100% on that yet. I'de have to spend time making posters etc, and I'd rather spend that time winning the Hackaday Prize. Also, if I did have a table set up, I'd have less time to look at everyone else's stuff.

BTW Andre, I didn't see my DNA Replicator in your favorites list below ;)

Hi, can we meet on Thursday afternoon? Do you have a phone number? I would show you what we are working on and you could show me your project maybe? I like the triangular / hexagonal design, was thinking along the same lines ...

LOL, no, real ridable train set 184mm gauge. Like here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Reparations.jpg

I think it'll be possible to setup everything to build something like a basic self propelled tram car within a day. Wheels need to be made ahead of time, but the rest can be sond. Someone doing the Electronics and 2-3 ppl doing the welding etc.

I may be able to bring some 3d scanners and 3d printers and do free scans of everybody. Is there a special email adresse to discuss details if it's possbile? It's not commercial, there is no company, it's a public /government institution.

The date matches great to the electronika :)
Perhaps you could take a less suspicious Name for this event?
I think most chefs are afraid of sending employees to a "Hackaday Munich" event... something like "Open Hardware Workshop Munich" would be much easier to convince the bosses ;)

Mike Szczys wrote 09/22/2014 at 17:47 point
Hehe... I see what you mean. Well, I'm sure we'll have a ticketing system up soon enough. I'll see what can be done about a more boss-approved title.

Of course this is really just a problem of properly educating your coworkers and supervisors about the awesomeness of the Hackaday community. ;-)

I suppose the winner candidates could prepare dozens of kits to sell/showcase at the venue?
My favorites are :
- openMV http://hackaday.io/project/1313-OpenMV

- micropython http://micropython.org/

- Open Tricorder http://hackaday.io/project/1395-Open-Source-Science-Tricorder

I would be glad to support them by purchasing, testing and discussing their design if they were to attend. Cheers!

I'll be attending to the "Electronica Germany" fair, I hope a can sneak out. What about building a Automatic Test System? something open, based on a PC and a Rack. We could select a board an develop a bed of nails fixture. It could be useful to have an open environment to develop our test systems for our manufactured designs.
