I started using it for battery charging (solar panels), BUT I have damaged at least three ..then I switched to this ( never had any trobubles since )

My guess is that XL4005 is sensitive to overload at low voltage( event though there is a current limit ). Maybe you won't have that problem when it is connected to stable power supply.
