Can you tell me what type of backlight this monitor has and maybe if it is available online? I have the same U2711, but like to replace the CCFL to get in back in normal working order.

Hi! I'm Thomas. I have similar modification like yours but instead I used RGB-LED to make it Wide-Gamut Display. As The U2711 have WCG-CCFL the color gamut is extended with narrower primary color. You should mod it with RGB-LED. But with more complexity of controlling portion of R-G-B amount which vary the color temperature of the monitor.

cool project, I would imangine that the warm white leds would create an incorrect color balance. Had any problems with that?

Haha yes, I doubt this will be useful for color sensitive work anymore, but adjusting the color balance makes it look pretty normal (the picture makes it look more orange than it is and only 6 of the 16 strips are on in that picture). I would probably recommend cool white or perhaps rgb if someone else was to try this.
