This poor fruit cake tin already has fourteen holes in it, but I still need to decide where to put the power switch and the output jack.
I'm one knob short. Fortunately, they haven't shut down all the Radio Shacks in this town yet. I wanted to use the 3/4" fluted hex knobs from RS, but they're too short for the pot shafts. I happened to have a single RS control knob, which is a healthy 18.88mm tall. These will leave just enough room for movement.
The current picture is just a teaser. The board is all done except for connecting up the panel mount components of which there are several. Okay, so the board is half done.

Decide between 1/8" and 1/4" output jack and where to put it
A couple of weeks ago, a co-worker needed a logic function and the 74HC drawer was empty. I suggested a CD4000 device. He had never heard of them. We had a drawer with a part he could use. I'm glad I didn't tell him to just use a couple of transistors. I think I will look up some ground-breaking stuff on the Internet Archive now. Sigh.
I can't remember how many I bought. It probably wasn't enough. I have some 4040Ns and 4051Ns coming soon, and I may use those to add a waveform generator to this project.
I meant to tell you on the other thread--I was in the middle of learning about them on my own by way of the immense resource that is Beavis Audio (see project links) when the Logic Noise column appeared. I couldn't believe the timing!
When it comes to 4000 logic, before ordering anything I ask my dad to check his drawer for parts, since he got a whole bunch of them from a closed workshop. He had no 4040 or 4060 but I hope I can replace it with his last 4029, since it's also a clocked binary counter. I hope to use it with the 4051 as a sequencer. I'll definitely check the links later :)
I dunno how much taking-apart you do... but a wealth of 4000-series was just located on an old laptop motherboard, as well as exactly the 74HC's I need. 20+ years of boxes of PCBs from junk, along with a heatgun, can supply you with dang-near anything you might need ;)
Oh it looks like very useful idea and also very similar to birthday cake type of projects as you can see here.
