Description

When you're lying awake in bed hearing the infamous sound of a flying mosquito all around you, do you ever wish you could just pull it out of the air? I did, and I started work on what has become my favorite project. It combines the attractiveness of cfl lighting with compact suction from a server fan to quickly and efficiency kill mosquito's and other flying pests. It uses the very common 9.6v NiMH packs everyone has left over from old RC cars. It uses readily sourced components that can be replaced easily using a modular design.

Details

First attempt used an Xbox cooling fan, it was very effective but too bulky to be handheld. I came across a high flow mini server fan and knew it was what this project needed.

Components

1 × Server exhaust fan The primary component in this, it provides airflow, along with a quick and painless death for the mosquito that comes in contact with the blades
1 × 9.6V RC car battery Common in many households, they provide cheap portable power for hours of use.
1 × 4" CCFL tube with 12V driver Was found through testing with the fan off to attract mosquitoes, doubles as an aiming assist in the dark.
1 × Lighted rocker switch exactly what it sounds like
1 × 4" diameter x 5" long cardboard tube serves as the intake barrel. found by trial and error to be long enough to aim but short enough not to be unwieldy

I think your idea is great. How does it kill the mosquitos when they get in there? Does the fan just chop them up? If you could make it handle really tiny insects too (like fruit flys) that would make it even more amazing.

Interesting and potentially very useful project! How do you plan on attracting the mosquitos? It was my understanding that they are attracted to exhaled CO2 (although I am not a biologist; that is just something I seem to remember hearing years ago).
