seems like there are a lot of "firefly" projects out there already, but so far I've only seen them work in darkness with photo resistors or diodes.

Just a quick thought - you could send IR packets at random intervals to deal with collisions.

yeah I was wondering about that, maybe something like "if you see something, shut up and wait" and then a little random wait maybe.
