Tks a lot, Hari. I've got it. I can clearly see u're using a very simple way with serial. Since I'm recycling from what's available in my 'garage', this is what I used:

1. LCD 1602A 16x2 from Shenzen EON Electronic;

2. MCP23017;

3. ESP8266, ESP-01;

4. Arduino Nano, instead of FTDI.

I used GPIO-A of MCP23017 as the control port for the LCD (GPA7=E, GPA6=R/W, GPA5=R/S), and GPIO-B for data port (GPB0..7 maps respectively to DB0..7 of the LCD).

I can send both control bits and 8-bits data from the ESP8266 to MCP23017 (using I2C SDA & SCL), which is reflected all the way to the LCD port as mentioned above.

But, somehow the LCD won't display the 8-bits data as expected. I've tried this sequence as advised at another forums:

- set Enable bit/pin to High,

- send the 8-bits data from ESP8266 to MCP23017 GPIO-B,

- and, set Enable bit/pin to Low.

This sequence is described in the LCD specification at the section regarding the write-to-LCD operation.

I also have tried to put in some delays, though it doesn't seem to work, either.

If you're as curious as me, and you don't mind to evaluate my codes, I think it's better for me to send the .ino to ur email.

I'm also interested in your breadboard layout program. It looks like you were able to include custome parts.

What program did you use to draw the breadboard?
