I don't know how to tell, but I really love the old stream. Please don't change it.
Constructive criticism:
0. It's very slow. It takes seconds to start. The old stream appears instantly.
1. A streams, by definition, is a chain of consecutive events. A categorized "stream" is nothing but a messy collection of blobs. It's very hard to follow.
2. "Ivan Lazarevic added RoGeorge, davedarko, LazyHD, and 11 more hackers as contributors to the project new feed.an hour ago".
Adding as a contributor should not be at all an event for the stream. Neither in the old or the new stream. Why would somebody want to see the first 4 added, but to click for the rest of 11 added?
Also, the numbers are wrong. In the last our, maybe I was added, but not all 15 contributors.
3. "Ivan Lazarevic, Adam Vadala-Roth, and Benchoff sent you a private message.an hour ago".
This sound like all three composed together the message.
Also, all the grouped people are represented by one small icon, the icon from the first name in the group.
Then, big icons for each member in the group, but not each, only the first 4.
4. Half of the stream consist of big profile icons, with profile description and a "Follow" button. Why would someone want to follow a guy. Just because is listed in the stream, or because of the profile description, or maybe because of the avatar?
5. Big profile icons with descriptions.
Why big icons for profiles. Usually, people do not come to Hackaday.io to see faces or avatars. People want to see projects instead.
A profile description, or a motto, does not change often. Seeing the same phrase over and over is redundant, and in time will make those words meaningless.
6. Big chunk of comments in stream, with a reply field inside the stream.
This is too much. It will make people to avoid clicking and following a conversation in the comments. You will never know for sure where from are those comments. It is just a TL;DR.
7. Somebody followed you, then the profile icon from the follower and the followed.
Why would someone want to see it's own profile icon, location and description? Those personal information usually don't change with each new follower.
8. Small icons instead of project pictures.
Project pictures are very important. Many times I went to visit a project because of some details potted in the picture. Small icons makes details invisible.
9. For whatever reason, the old stream incite to go and click on a project or a profile. Once arrived there, the reader is focused on the visited page. In time, a map of projects and people is developed.
The new stream looks messy, and stuffed with unimportant or redundant information. It will make users to dizzy scroll, but without paying attention.
10. The new stream looks hard to follow, and hard to extract the relevant information or the timeline of the events. A stream should be a concise collection of pointers to the events of interest since the last visit.
A stream should incite rather then flood the user.
It is not so clear yet, what the new feed is trying to achieve with its new look? In what way it is supposed to be better?
P.S.
It must have took a lot of effort to implement all the changes. I apologize if this feedback was too harsh. You, guys and girls, are doing a wonderful job by keeping Hackaday ticking, gathering and inspiring a whole community, each and every day. I am very grateful for all you are doing.
Just noticed a "Like" button. This is so wrong at so many levels.
