3D Workcenter

The Do all, End all machine in a 50x50x50 cm cube

Similar projects worth following
Welcome to one of my projects :-)

First I was unsure to share this project to the world, but what the hack why not :-)
We probably all have the same problem, to many toys and not enough room.
I have all the tools I need to create anything I want, but have no space left.
One CNC mill, two manual mills, two lathes, one band saw and all sorts of other tools that have their space in my "lab". It's to much but need and use them all.
I'm sure you know what I'm talking about right.
One solution would be, move the wall between my "lab" and the bedroom. My wife was not to happy with that idea :-(
So only one solution left, combine machines.

We all have seen the 3D printers around the world.
Well.........I'm feeding this one with steroids!

Some technical info:
-4 NEMA23 1,7A per coil stepper motors, two on the Z axis
-20x20 extrusion Structure, very sturdy
-X axis powered on two sides, belt driven on two sides
-Z axis powered on four sides, belt driven on all four corners

-Every stepper motor has his own TB6600 stepper driver

-Smoothieboard controller

-Raspberry Pi with Octopi distro, wireless network

When the machine is done it will be able to:

-3D print (stage 1)

-Mill (stage 2)

-Turn (stage 3)

-3D scan (stage 4)

-Laser cut (stage 5)

Stage 1 is well on it's way

The machine is coming along nicely

X,Y and Z axis are done, mounting bed is done.

I do not want the machine to be completely controlled by gcode, I also want to be able to manually control all axis. To reach this goal I will add a long digital caliper to each axis and redirect it's outputs through an Arduino Mega to the Raspberry Pi.

One caliper (axis) is done, it displays it's reading nicely in a Processing sketch I've written on my Windows PC. Two more axis to go.

This week I hope I have time to create and mount the home and end switches for each axis so I can play a little with the Smoothieboard.

Can you add some documentation on how you interfaced the calipers to the RasPi?

Hi Eric,
It's not all going in there, the different modes will be swappable :)

Sounds ambitious, but definitely will be a good build to watch. Not sure how you plan on fitting that much stuff in such a small box!
