uMotio - Open 3D tracking and gesture controller

An Arduino™ compatible 3D Tracking and Gesture Controller

Similar projects worth following
uMotio is an attempt at an open and easy to use 3d tracking and gesture controller. It is based on the Gestic from microchip. A collegue and I decided to do a little project where we combine the gestic with an atmega32u4, essentially making an arduino (tm) compatible controller. We have an arduino(tm) library up and running which makes it so easy to use.

It's a combination of a very cool gesture controller chip from microchip combined with the ease of use of the arduino(tm). We also changed the arduino core a bit so that the atmega32u4 enumerates with a serial port, joystick controller and a keyboard. This allows us to play games with gesture control, read x,yz position data and also built-in gesture data including swipes and airwheel. We currently have working prototypes and got so many requests for one that we decided to do a crowd-funding campaign which should hopefully go live on the 14th of April. We are also planning a bluetooth version with battery for wireless gesture control. Our attempt to create open tools for hackers. We are also busy doing a bunch of code examples, which will go on github soon :)

So we have been working on this for a few months and we (Tom Van den Bon & Ignatius Havemann) currently have working prototypes that we have been demoing at various hacker-spaces (House4Hack, BinarySpace) in South Africa. Currently we are working on getting all the details online and also doing various application builds with it. We have been asked to build more uMotio's so we have decided to create a crowdfunding campaign. It's still in the works, but should be live soon :)

With your experience with the MGC3130 do you know what the smallest 'field' that can be used?  Also, if you were to put a TFT display over it, would it still pick up gestures through the display?

The MGC3130 looks like a pretty neat IC, I'll have to take a look at it. Any plans to open source the hardware design for this project?
