Last year I upgraded one of those China import Laser Cutters known as K40. The upgrade was inspired by my Ormerod 3D printer and its Duet controller board. This proved to be quite easy to adapt and gave the Laser all the benefits of Network operation as well as making it possible to use the same workflow that I was using for 3D printing - i.e. generating 2D cutting paths in Gcode using Slic3r.
This explains something that may seem odd at first in the design I published for ChaiBot - 3D model data for 2D cutting! I documented the K40 upgrade and consequent workflow here: http://forums.reprap.org/read.php?133,521301
