Home server lab just found its way into this IKEA lack rack this weekend which is made of 2 lacks and some metal lumber.
Top is a Dell Poweredge 2950 II that i upgraded to dual Xeon X5355 2.66GHZ quad cores and 16GB of DDR2. 1 750GB Boot drive and 5 500GB drives in Raid 5 giving a 1.8TB raid array.
Second is a Supermicro H8DG6-F with Dual AMD Opteron 6234 12 cores and 64GB of DDR3. Added in a 4 port HP network card and a USB drive inside running ESXi 6.0. This server hosts a pfSense VM that acts as the router for the house and also has a Windows 2012 Server for video converting and managing the server through Vsphere. More updates to come
my big thing has always been price and ease of upgrade, these dell poweredges are dirt cheap, upgraded processors and ram are even cheaper, and for a machine that just needs to run all the time and handle a 5 disk RAID5, its a solid piece of hardware
