HP 1660A series logic analyzers are an advanced type of o instruments with huge functionality and quite complicated user interface. They also lack ability to decode modern serial interfaces, but what they have is an outstanding hardware front ends and specifications (and dimensions) that surpass pretty much anything on the same modern price range.

Hi, thanks for asking. Both HPIB and RS232 are viable, RS232 being simpler to use. It does not need any special drivers if VISA is not used thus would require a shorter tool chain.
But now I am looking into the https://sigrok.org/ project. It would make a lot more sense to just write drivers for the instrument and use existing tool instead of trying to roll out something custom.
what Interface will you use to pull data out of the analyzer? HPIB?
