Getting stuff done when you're watching your niece and changing diapers isn't an optimal combination! But I managed to write a little library that handles the display driving etc. So now I have to reprogram everything I had running before, like the enemies that are moving and drawing to the frame that then get's shown.
Just in case I need to scale this up and ever get to the point where I consider a PCBA service:
here are the LEDs I would probably want to use instead: LG T770, LY T77K, LP T770, LW T773, LG T770, LO T77K, LY T77K - well some of them.
this might be continued.

Did you know that Nintendo built big incandescent light bulb versions of game & watch games out of plywood during the development of each of the games to test out the graphics and gameplay? I read this in an Iwata asks interview and always wanted to build an LED version of octopus.
What would you say about something like https://castpixel.itch.io/wobble-jump
I don't get how to play it, but I guess that was the "charme" of a lot of those games :D definitely something worth checking out, as the graphics are fixed as well.
If you made a bunch of game&watch style mini-games I would buy one in a heartbeat
anything that comes to mind that would make sense to start with? What's your favorite? :D
It looks really nice, but how do you represent the missile from the player and from the enemies ?
I just hope it's fast enough to distract you from the looks :D this project was heavily inspired by this Space Invaders handheld by ENTEX
Nice. I can imagine a whole range of game & watch style games using backlit masked pcbs in the near future!
I was wondering what games one could do like that - I will probably try to code some sort of galaga version as well. It looks nice as a badge with scrolling text, too! Frogger might work with RGB LEDs. But charlieplexing a decent amount of RGB LEDs sounds too crazy for my taste :D
@thelogicofpi I imagine those are especially tough to solder upside down ;) in that case I'd rather do what @sjm4306 did with his #Small Word Clock project, use two pcbs and a 3D printed spacer.
The PCB sandwich approach also has the advantage that the spacer can include walls between the areas being lit, and thus reduce bleeding.
I wouldn't see bleeding as a problem with this build, the LEDs are far more apart than with the PCB word clock I made. A benefit would be that you can swap the face plates and make it a word clock or something else quickly.
If you went sandwich approach you could also get it assembled easier.
1mm, but should have been 1.6mm for more diffusion... why do I always change my mind last minute? :D
I’m wondering how did you make the light go throw PCB layer ? And how did you make the different colors of back and front ?
Hi! You can order matte black PCBs at JLCPCB.com. I removed the black soldermask and copper on both sides so the LED can shine through. The LED is also soldered upside down!

Any video of this working? Very cool.
