Lady Bug Open Lawn Mower Robot

Much of the design notes and changes to this point are loaded in screen shots of the modeling process. We measured every component to go into the robot first , then designed the shell around those.

This project will be available for 3D printed from files on thingiverse and I will also load them here. The first files are bulk and unrefined and not split up into smaller pieces for 3d printing yet.

i. Concept- Is the project creative, original, functional, and pushing boundaries? Does the project effectively address the selected challenge?


ii. Design- Is there a depth of design detail available (like a system design, CAD models, project test methods, etc.)? Is there base-level planning for the functionality (e.g., functional block diagram, list of specifications and descriptions of how they will be met, etc.)? How user-friendly is the design?


iii. Production- Is the project realistically reproducible (taking into consideration necessary materials, skills, and production processes)? Are the manufacturing processes detailed? Are those processes realistic for scalability?


iv. Benchmark- How well is the project impact and viability demonstrated? Are estimated costs realistic? How well does the project improve upon other currently available solutions?


v. Communication- How thoroughly have the Final Round requirements been completed? How well documented is the project? How “open” is the design?

I'm really interested in seeing how this one develops. I'd love an automated mower. Heck, I'd even love a remote controlled one so I can drive it from the comfort of my own home ha ha.

What are you planning to use to for the brains of the bot?

I owned a landscaping company many years ago (16 years). We did a lot of mowing. I was trying to come up with a very similar robo mower that would be perfect for small 1/8 acre yards in my area. One of my clients asked me about using a laser that would only affect green objects, similar to surgical lasers that only cauterize red colored tissue. It sounded like an awesome idea, but that type of laser was extremely expensive and took more power to run than an electric motor spinning a blade. Imagine this mower with a spinning laser that cut the grass, or sprinkler heads that would popup and have spinning lasers on top that would cut grass.

I still like the idea of this robo mower. I am looking forward to seeing this.

Hi Bobby, thanks for the comment. In this robot it uses a combination of spinning  4 inch razor blades and two trimmer line motors up from the get edges of objects as closely as possible. I imagine lasers would leave the neighborhood with a burning grass smell, hmm. mowers of the future.

Hello Mike! So this design will have 4 cutters. The first three are edging cutters which I am thinking will be similar to a weed eater and plastic fold back blades alternating. The main cutter will be the same height under the main body made up of 4 - 6” razor blades. I am sure I will experiment with a few different styles to see what works best.  Perimeter wire is the first go to buy I would really like to move to a gps rtk geofence once everything is together.

Looking forward to this one! Are you planning to use buried perimeter wire to keep the ladybug in the yard? What's the plan for the cutting mechanism, single spinning blade like traditional consumer mowers?
