The Macrocontroller

A processor made from 7400 series logic, designed from the gates up as a learning exercise in processor design

When I was in High School, during a discussion with one of the mentors of my FIRST robotics team, I realized I had no idea how processors actually work. I could do some basic programming, but I had no idea how a text file with some code in it was turned into actual actions in the real world. So, I read some books on it and started messing around with a logic gate simulator, and within a couple months had a working processor designed. A couple of iterations later, I decided to build it physically, this is the result. It took about three weeks to wire wrap, ran a couple of programs to blink some LEDs and run a seven segment display, and was then shelved. I brought it back out a few years later, in 2016, added a few things to it, and ported the design to verilog to have something more practically useful for other projects, but haven't used it for anything yet. The chips and wire wrap version is, at least for now, shelved, with no real plans for future work on it.
