14.03.2014. I must admit that I was partially wrong. We just tried a
more powerful stun gun 800,000 volts. We installed two sewing needles on
it and pierced the carbon tape. On the needles remained voltage of
about 150 volts.
The person will feel the electric strike.
We need an extra hard layer.
Please do not do experiments with electricity on humans and animals. This can cause serious injury or death!
I Just saw this on instructables... Should have known it came from Hackaday! I posted this comment before coming here and seeing that I am not the first person to consider this awesome (if possible) improvement. But, I managed to use 1000x the words so, heck, ill repeat what Zee just said in a more annoying version:
AFAIK, unless the fiber is grounded in some way, it can only disperse so much energy (into heat?). Our bodies are poor conductors, but are conductive to a high voltage charge with nowhere else to go.
So, give the charge any easier path away from you and, even with a probe embedded in your skin, it wont shock you. So, what if the fiber had two isolated layers with high capacity super capacitors between them to create a negative charge on the outer layer, and an opposing positive charge on the inner layer? This would create a complete circuit through the super capacitors which would not only safely reroute a direct lightning strike (might get warm tho) but would actually attract and absorb the charge into the capacitors so quickly it could drain the tiny taser battery in seconds, likely destroying it and/or catching it on fire. At the very least, it would become to hot to hold.
Then, as the bad guys are pissing themselves over your obvious invincibility (forming a nice, conductive path from ground, direct to their bladder) you encourage them to try a more physical approach. Upon contact, the entire 2000kV charge is instantly discharged back to it's rightful owner, which should transport the crook a sizable distance away from you. This would ensure escape and that you will NEVER be messed with again!
As an added benefit, kids who spend hours rubbing their socks on the carpet, plotting an evil attack would receive perfectly proportioned justice immediately :)
I dabble in electronic engineering as a hobby. But I am not sure If my logic is correct here? Im hoping someone will help me to understand if I am right or wrong, why, and what other methods could work without having to drive a lightening rod 20ft into the ground?? Laptops, cell phones and aircraft manage to work with high energy without earth ground connections somehow. I THINK this is achieved by having multilayered copper PCB boards with a -V and +V charged planes on the outside. I assume that using "negative voltage" in opposed equilibrium to the positive voltage, instead of the traditional "neutral ground" circuit is what makes this possible. But, that is just my assumption. Please, someone explain if I have this wrong???
