Another Pi4 based cyberdeck, this time with analog sticks.

Current aim is to make:

- Something with familiar, yet homebrew design (it's mostly about the case).

- A go-anywhere, do-anything SBC based system with Linux.

- Integrated solution for UAV control of different kinds (analog sticks, extra monitor, transmitter, receiver etc.)

- Not something entirely modular (it's hard) but would be nice to be able to swap parts for different tasks.

- Something autonomous.

- A proper excuse to dive deep into device design.

And it happens to take form a raspberry pi cyberdeck with analog sticks and dual monitor setup.

Tune in!

If that looks like a mess - that's because it is and it's that way because it's in the middle of a panel/frame swap (and new panel is right in the center of the frame).

I've got this nagging feeling after that last update - buttons are boring! So I'm gonna have them and something else too!

Sort of a keep-alive log about trying to figure out how to build on top of what's already present.

^ This is how current iteration of the deck looks if I was to make build instruction.
Do those white pieces in the left bottom belong anywhere on the build? The answer is below.

ELRS TX and throttle stick positions has been switched. Probably needs more adjustments for comfortable throttling action, maybe some cushioning around and symmetry is now officially ruined but i guess that's how it's gonna be from now on.

There are people who tried to reload things like if they are scifi weapons (Kommander Karl style) and those who aren't entirely honest about it.

A lot of things happened since the last log - some progress and a detour in the middle.

So I was gaining some momentum in this project and then Cyberdeck Cafe has bitten me with this idea to share with people how I go about designing things in FreeCAD - throwing me out of the saddle for two weeks.

It has ended so bad, I came up with an actual haphazard writeup of how to model your own portable terminal in FreeCAD from concept, to a production-ready handheld, including my own, 14th in a row explanation of what it the most problematic thing in FreeCAD and how to trick around it.

If you ever wanted to either push through a wall of semitechnical text or just curious how to make things in this software, here is an attention attracting picture of the result:https://bytebucket.org/mkdxdx/howtobuildashelf/raw/b4e4769d32f71c798d36a78f6f3e5c0bd1085519/img/readydeck.pngAnd link to tutorial: https://bitbucket.org/mkdxdx/howtobuildashelf/

Other updates: rail-mounted battery pack, VRX mount, primary circuit breaker, new monitor and ELRS micro TX caddy - as usual, below the break.

    The screen is back.

But the replacement is on it's way.

  • Things just can't be that simple, can they?

So, that old screen holder was mostly for show - it is functional but it's ugly and it does not do everything i want it to, it's not rigid enough and mounting it on the deck is troublesome, requiring internal access.

I had to redesign it and after that, there was another adventure. Lots of pics under the break:

  • Redesign time

    mkdxdx07/16/2024 at 22:32 0 comments

    Just a bit of.

I've decided to do away with separate interface plates as they don't really add that many functions - due to my limited printing volume panels are already cut and sorta modular, so if i need to - i can reprint every panel instead. It's probably gonna bite my back when i will mount electronics inside - after all interface plates provided plenty of mounting holes and now they are gone.

Small screen also got it's buttons placed on top instead of to the side, because that place will be filled with other controls. I have to think about removing those button panels in favor of IR control, because these do take up space and aren't really used that much.

Big screen space got it's interface panel now instead of it being a conduit place for cables and such. The aim is to provide an easy way to remove said screen and open connectors for HMD, even bigger screen and such. It also has DC output terminal for the screen or anything else that can accept 12V. XT60 will act as primary voltage input for the whole deck - battery module will be separable part, attachable onto exposed part of the back rail.

I hope there will be no more redesign as there is still alot of work to do and blackouts severely limit my ability to print drafts - and i'm yet to finish exterior conception. And I haven't even touched electronics yet!

Printing stuff's became kinda tedious with more frequent blackouts nowadays, but there is some progress.

Temporary dull panels to see if things fit (spoiler - isn't always the case) and after I find a way to securely attach second monitor, imma go design backpanel and some other stuff this thing requires.

    Still thinking about name.
