i would love to see some wifi peer to peer functionality to go off internet and bounce connections via multiple Rasperies and other p2p grid enabled devices as an alternative transport to the grid. I'm thinking something like BATMAN ADV protocol see open-mesh.org. It is layer 2 routing much like ATM or a whole bunch of ether switches with source routing. Also how about using epaper display so that that rather large power draw could be minimised.... a builder's choice. But, yeah, one step at a time.

that new $20-ish epaper display does look pretty sweet, but if you want something like this, much better to have a sealed-off and non-interactive pi that doesn't attract attention, I think. If you really need to get to the pi, the e-paper isn't going to display the data you need as well as SSH'ing in will- and if you can't do that, you probably need to plug the device in to a real screen, power supply, and have a real keyboard to do anything with it. But if you did this sort of thing right, you could have reasonably fast internet, and if you were a bit clever with that you could probably get some mileage out of sending non-overlapping parallel data streams, so that the content being sent over the mesh arrives at the destination from multiple paths from the originating server.
