The purpose of this project is to design and build a robot for extreme environments. Resistance to high levels of radiation is the primary goal, such as a reactor leak or melt down. Electronics, being particularly vulnerable to radiation, will be located remotely via a tether. The electronics, hydraulics, controls, and sensors will be on a platform with remote control capability. When radiation levels approach its operating limits the platform will separate. The secondary platform that continues to desired location in an extreme environment will be entirely operated via hydraulics. The wheels and manipulator arms will be powered via the primary unit through a tether containing the appropriate tubes and feedback lines. Fiber optics from the hydraulic secondary unit will be fed through this tether to cameras on the primary unit. Manipulator arm pressure will also be transmitted via the tether with hydraulic lines to pressure sensors in the primary unit.
