How Does it Work?

I went deep into the design and algorithms on the repository readme, so I won't put the long-form here. This is the short of it:

  • The sensor works by capacitively coupling some transmit pads to a receiving pad and an analog input.
  • The microcontroller sends patterns of pulses across the capacitance.
  • The capacitance makes some pulses come through larger and others smaller.
  • That effect is linear to the position

Why Build This?

This sensor came out of a long-running personal project. I started by reverse-engineering digital capacitive calipers. I wanted to publish this working capacitive encoder because I had trouble finding open information about them.

I'm working on future revisions. If you're interested, please let me know how future revisions could be more useful to you!

I'd welcome help with this! Especially with repeat builds and help on the mechanical design, which is far outside my expertise. See the repository for more information on how to get involved.
