TooWheels - the opensource wheelchair

Hacking castor wheels of plastic using rollerblade rubber wheels, to reduce shock's vibration, and changing bicycle wheel's bearing with a 12x20mm bearing, fitting perfectly on a normal wheelchair axle.  

If is not possible to fix your wheelchair wheel, or you don't find some replacement part for the wheels, using the toowheels hub's project you can create an hub for every kind of wheel (different diameters, numbers of spokes, size, etc..) with only some pipes and recycled bearings. Follow the instruction on the website or at hackaday project page!

We make two toowheels at Espacio Open a digital fabrication laboratory (https://espacioopen.com/) in Bilbao during the Bilbao Design Week, for a local Basketball team!

With the help of some friend, we create a 3D model of the forces acting on the Wheelchair frame and we are working on topological optimization using grasshopper and millipede plugins.

New CNC design tips for the Badminton prototype: like joints of different shapes and phenolic birch plywood, with increased resistance and less metal parts.

@FablabTorino, and co-designed in collaboration with coaches and athletes. The source files are available on www.toowheels.org, also for diy tools!

Thanks to the "fablab replication grant" of the FABLAB FOUNDATION, we set up a workshop with the fablab of Yachay in Ecuador, teaching the local community how the Toowheels design works and following them step by step in a mentoring program. This video shows the result of the team-work, and we hope the beginning of new workshops that teach local people how to built a wheelchair!
