Description

An 8 band audio visualizer with bi-color LED matrix, all installed in a 2' x 2' table. This project is based on the MAKE Magazine Vol 51 project. http://makezine.com/projects/ikea-music-table/

Details

The original version of this project used a standard electret microphone to pick up the audio and the FFT Arduino library to analyze the signal. I was not happy with the response; it was not clear and despite all of my attempts to tune it I could only pick up 3 or 4 channels at most. In a previous project I used an MSGEQ7 spectrum analyzer and it worked fantastically. I also added an external gain knob to adjust the response on the fly.

This is the circuit embedded in the table. The Arduino Uno feels a bit overpowered for this, but it was the quickest way to get both 3.3V and 5V power. The second ground is important, as the microphone works best when using a dedicated ground connection.
I built a small board to hold the through-hole components and MSGEQ7.

This is the best result I could get with the initial construction. The response is very uneven and I cannot get the higher frequencies to register at all.
