Infant mortality is an especially pressing problem in the developing world, but regular breastfeeding for the first six months of life can reduce infant mortality by 93%. Mothers in developing countries cite the need to work and go to the market as an obstacle to regular breastfeeding. In more developed countries, this problem is trivially solved via refrigerating breastmilk for later feeding. However, electricity is limited or nonexistent, and refrigerators require a large investment that many can't afford.

Every year, Ugandan farmers lose up to half of their milk to spoilage, even before reaching the market. One in four liters of milk sold in Uganda spoils before consumption, and is simply poured down the drain. Lack of refrigeration is a major problem.

The MilkSafe offers a simple, cheap, and reliable way to refrigerate liquids without requiring any electricity whatsoever. The device achieves rapid cooling via an endothermic process, and the coolant material is reusable.
