The display featured actual-sized replicas of the first Earth satellites launched by the United States and the Soviet Union. The timeline was short, and the display needed to be relatively large, sturdy, and withstand weather, since it was an outdoor display.
What ensued was a rapid succession of events in the fabrication of these replicas. The schedule was the main factor. Many considerations needed to be made in order to balance the short timeline with the shipment and delivery time of parts, the choice of manufacturing process, price, number of cycles of curing times of epoxies and paint, time of fabrication processes - and it needed to be achievable at the highest quality afforded by such timeline.
The replicas were fairly true to the originals (as much as time allowed) and were received well.
