Radio Controlled Steampunk Swampboat

Hull 3D printed in three pieces, with a design reminiscent of the steam punk flavor.

Similar projects worth following
A friend of mine asked me to beef up his son's Mini Alligator Tours swamp boat. After extensive 'testing' of the mods, I decided it would be in my best interest to have one of my own. Limited to a 6 cubic inch 3D print bed, I opted to create the hull in three pieces, joined together by locking tabs. The motor I used is an 1806 2300kv brushless powered by a 3s 1300mah battery through a 12amp ESC. Could still (always) use a little more jam... I just hate doing things that have been done before, so I threw in a little steam punk for fun. Now if I could only get it to stay above the water...

This build is quite heavy. It floats, but it is a little low in the water. It toodles around at low speeds just fine, but rev it up and for some unknown reason, it becomes a submarine! The nose dives.

One possible reason for this could be the roughness of the hull due to the layering effects of 3D printing. If this creates enough drag (especially in the front end) it could cause the effect that I am seeing.

Other project goals include a cover that will seal in the electronics with associated grommets etc.

  • 1 × DYS 1806 2300kvh motor What I had on hand
  • 1 × 12A DYS BLHeli ESC What I had on hand. Would prefer something waterproof...
  • 1 × 3D printed hull, motor frame, steering vanes It is amazing that with a little thought, a person can print almost everything needed structurally
  • 1 × TowerPro 9g servo What I had on hand, salvaged from a hexapod
  • 1 × 5030 prop

So I went ahead and rough sanded most the bottom of the hull, concentrating on the bow.

I gave it another rip on the pond, and same results or worse... hmmm.
