also please inform me about the grbl variation for using the up/down servo

Heated wire... that would just burn the house down, because masking tape is made from paper. But might be worth a try for variations using electrical tape, anyway, thanks for the suggestion. The link to the modified Grbl is in the left column, just do a Ctrl-F for "Pen Servo".
